Top Notch Fishing Charters Represents Costa Rica at U.S. Sportfishing Events

Members of our Costa Rica sportfishing team have traveled north to the United States – Ocean City, Maryland, to be exact – to take part in the following two tournaments.

White Marlin Open, August 7-11

The 44th Annual White Marlin Open just wrapped up in Ocean City, MD, and what an experience it was! The tournament, known as the world’s largest for billfish, drew more than 350 boats this year. The Top Notch 50-foot Viking was among those, and from its decks, we gave it our all for three amazing days. And, let us tell you, day one was a doozy.

Anglers who chose to fish this day, like our Top Notch team, faced dangerous storms. These were full of heavy rain, winds and tornado warnings. Fortunately, the weather cooperated for the rest of the tournament. This allowed many anglers to make qualifying catches and grab a piece of that $4.9 million purse. One happy participant is Mike Donohue of Delaware, who scored an 86 lb white marlin. Another happy angler is Andy Eget of Jersey Marine who landed a 70 lb. white marlin on the final day! A huge congrats on behalf of Top Notch Fishing Charters!

The weather also allowed us to get out on our laydays and share details on our Costa Rica sportfishing and vacation packages. Yet, we have to say, the bonus, for all who may be football fans, too, was hanging out with Warren Sapp. The American pro hall of famer is also a sportfishing enthusiast and has become part of the Top Notch fishing family, fishing this tournament with us, and also joining us in the Bahamas and in Costa Rica for on-going fun and fishing! Mr. Sapp definitely isn’t only good at football, Folks- He is quite the angler!

Poor Girls Open, August 17-19

The 24th Annual Poor Girls Open kicks off Thursday, August 17th, at the sportfishing headquarters of Ocean City, MD, the Bahia Marina. In its three days, female anglers from near and far will compete in this ladies-only billfish release tournament with added entry levels for tuna and dolphin. And, the goal is great – to raise money for breast cancer research.

This affordable tournament was the vision of the late Capt. Steve Harman, who founded the event in 1994. He did so for local waitresses and bartenders unable to take part in other competitions due to increasing fees. And since then, women have returned year-after-year for both its fun and its worthy cause. In fact, over 100 boats enter each year. This has resulted in more than $100,000 donated to the American Cancer Society in the past three years alone. It’s this reason and more Top Notch Fishing Charters is proud to participate. We look forward to taking part in our 50-foot Viking and to telling fellow anglers all about Costa Rica sportfishing. Good luck to all!
